pstrongIn A Word, YES!/strong/p
pAlthough the loud, bombastic, and foul mouth comedians tend to get the the majority of publicity, it should be noted that a href=http://www.melaniemaloy.com/clean-comedians/ target=_blankstrongclean comedians/strong/a are also finding popularity in the world of entertainment.nbsp; Their primary market has traditionally been in business outings and conventions.nbsp; However, in todays world we can see these non-vulgar talents becoming more common in ldquo;mainstreamrdquo; areas such as Tv and nightclubs. And needless to say they continue to do nicely in small, conventional niches such as class reunions, church groups, etc.br /br /In actuality, this trend towards the mainstream has been to some degree compelled by the monetary problems running rampant in the corporate world.nbsp; Many top-flight clean comedy acts have felt the pinch of corporate cuts in spending for non-essential worker benefits. Hiring a comic, for example, to provide a motivational talk at a meeting seems to be categorized as non-essential by corporate professionals. It is refreshing to observe these comedians discover new channels for their skills.br /br /Here are two prime examples of successful clean comedians :br /br /br /stronga href=http://www.melaniemaloy.com/clean-comedians/ target=_blankClean Comedians/a Example #1:nbsp; Brian Regan/strongbr /br /Brian Regan is probably the first name on anybodys list of clean comedians.nbsp; He has developed an act that is absolutely killing audiences, from kids to grandparents to evangelical Christians, without a single expletive!br /br /It has not always been that way with Regan, however.nbsp; When he started out in 1981 he was known to spice up a joke by dropping an intermittent F-bomb, but eventually he removed them from his act.br /I started thinking, If you are that close to the finish line anyway, why not just put the ball over the line? he says. It seemed kind of silly to be ninety five percent clean. You may as well be 100 percent clean and see what happens.br /Though his comedy can best be described as goofyndash;but hilariousndash;observational humor (holding up a circus-funhouse mirror to society is how he describes it), he doesnt intentionally avoid stepping on toes.br /I do not want my comedy to be completely devoid of a point of view, he says. I will give them the gift of knowing I am not going to throw any four-letter words in there and that Im not going to hit on any sexual topics. But other than that, I need to retain the right to be able to say something on-stage. I have to be able to risk bumping up against a topic here or there that may have somebody go, Wow, I do not agree with that. Thats okay. I do not want it to become so wholesome it has no substance whatsoever.br /br /br /strongClean Comedians Example #2:nbsp; Ryan Hamilton/strongbr /br /Ryan Hamiltonnbsp; is a clean comedian who was raised in Idaho. He now makes his home, and typically performs in New York City, where he has created quite a name for himself.nbsp; His specialty is thoroughly clean humor, with a little Mormon flavour. This interesting twist has made him one of the top clean comedians in the business.nbsp; Actually he was not too long ago named one of Rolling Stone magazines Five Comics to Watch and made an appearance at Montreals esteemed Just For Laughs festival.nbsp; Not bad for a guy who never resorts to vulgarity to get a laugh.br /br /Hamilton says he tries to be authentic and true to himself when he comes up with his blend of observational, vitalized comedy.nbsp; For me, it doesnt feel like Im changing myself as a person, or making concessions. hellip; I talk about whatever I believe is funny, he said. I dont think of a (vulgar) joke and go Oh, I cannot do that. hellip; It just does not come up when Im writing. br /br /Hamilton goes on to say that his emphasis on clean comedy isnt so much a moral choice as it is a matter of genuineness. He mentioned he doesnt just want to be clean, though. He wants to do comedy that leaves people feeling more happy than when they arrived, as opposed to the negative, heavy mood that remains long after a pessimistic or cynical comic departs the stage.br /br /You can go to a show and laugh a lot and come out feeling heavy because even though what the comic is talking about may be super funny, it can still have a heavy tone, he said. You can cry laughing and come out of the show feeling, Whew, I kind of feel sorry for that guys life. His life is really difficult, and boy, you will find a lot of problems in the world. hellip; And even though theres an important place for that in comedy, I have just kind of made a decision that I want people to laugh a lot and come out feeling good.br /br /To sum it up, He says I want to be a good comedian who happens to be Mormon rather than The Mormon Comedian.nbsp; Amen to that!br /br /strongSummary:/strongbr /br /With so many vulgar comics running rampant on cable television, I think we can all be grateful for comics such as Ragen and Hamilton.nbsp; It is great to know that humor does not need to be shocking, and that its not necessary to be offensive in order to be funny./p
